Food Sustainability A Multi Faceted And Complex Topic...

Food sustainability is a multi-faceted and complex topic that has social, economic, and environmental components. Food sustainability’s goal is to provide enough food for all people and to accomplish this goal in a way that doesn’t negatively impact the environment and can be done in an economical way. Food sustainability is important because as the world population keeps growing, food production will have to increase in order to meet this new demand. In an article published by Science Magazine, scientists identify the issue of food sustainability. They state that , â€Å"continuing population and consumption growth will mean that the global demand for food will increase for at least another 40 years† (Feb 10, 2010, pg. 812, H. Chalres Godfray, John Beddington, Ian Crute, Lawrence Haddad, David Lawrence, James Muir, Jules Pretty, Sherman Robinson, Sandy Thomas, and Camilla Toulmin). In other words, by 2050, the world population will be about 9 billion people and thus food production will have to meet the rising population. Food sustainability is also important because there are people around the world that currently don’t have food to eat. According to the World Food Program, there are 795 million people in the world that currently do not have enough food to live a healthy life. In addition, the majority of the world’s hungry people live in developing countries, with Asia containing the most hungry people.
